Spiritual direction is significantly different from any kind of therapy.
One goes to therapy for something that needs to be fixed. In spiritual direction nothing has gone wrong even though considerable anxiety leads a person to seek answers to some very important questions. The questions, however, are those that any mature and reflective person may have and indeed should have. The questions might be phrased as “what is the meaning of my life?” or “what is the purpose of my life?” In the case that one is already a religious person the question might be: “What does God want me to do with the rest of my life?”
Normally we would advise you to seek help from your priest or the minister of your congregation. In the case of a priest, the confessional can be an appropriate occasion for spiritual direction. But not all priests feel competent to engage in spiritual direction. Just ask. If all else fails we are here for you. Dr. Stanislaus Dundon PhD. was extensively trained in the spirituality of St. Teresa of Avila. He will tend to recommend her writings (e.g. The Way Of Perfection). But you, the client, may have your own favorite author in this area: St. Ignatius Loyola, Thomas à Kempis, St. John of the Cross, and practically any of the founders of religious orders who have left significant writing for their followers.
